Buy The Demo
"Buy the Demo" is an ongoing inside joke among members of the Pirate Software community, often mentioned in conjunction with the Pirate Pass.
Origin and propagation
The joke originated from a saying within the community before 2023, but it gained wider traction after a Twitch livestream in October 2023 featuring Thor's father, Joeyray Hall[1]. During the stream, in response to a viewer's question, Joeyray Hall suggested checking out Heartbound by "buying the demo". Thor quickly corrected his father, saying, "The demo is free." Thor laughed, but Joeyray, still responding to viewers' questions, added: "Yes... I think you should pay the full price."
The saying gained further popularity during another Twitch livestream in November 2023 when Thor, experiencing a slip of the tongue, proclaimed, "Please, Buy the Demo"[2].
The joke then proliferated as a general expression among community members, often used humorously to discuss the supposed cost of the demo or jokingly complain that they cannot afford it.
